2024

Greeting from Dr. Hoffmeister-Kraut, Minister for Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism of the State of Baden-Württemberg

Dear participants of the European Sustainability Week,

today more than ever, sustainable management is a key issue in business, society and politics. At a time when global challenges such as climate change, social injustice and the conservation of our natural resources are becoming ever more pressing, we as a society and economy must work together to develop innovative solutions and act responsibly.

Initiatives such as the European Sustainability Week not only provide an excellent opportunity to discuss the latest developments in sustainable business and corporate governance, but also to share knowledge and experience, showcase best practices and network. Only through dialog and cooperation at all levels can we successfully shape the transformation towards a more sustainable economy and society.

I am proud of our companies in the country, which are already leading the way in sustainable transformation. As Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor and Tourism of the state of Baden-Württemberg, it is particularly important to me to help shape the framework conditions for the economy in such a way that companies can continue to operate, invest and grow here in the future. Particularly in difficult economic times, I believe that this also means not burdening companies with a constant stream of new and increasingly complex regulations.

That is why I am working at all levels to ensure that the requirements placed on companies remain feasible and proportionate. This also applies to the area of sustainability. Our many small and medium-sized companies in particular, which are often indirectly affected by reporting obligations due to their involvement in supply and value chains, need our support and relief.

The sustainable transformation of the economy can only succeed if we once again focus on more market and less state control. The many positive examples from my state show me that companies are facing up to their responsibilities and that enormous progress is being made towards climate-neutral production. The message is: it is possible to do business in an ecologically sustainable and at the same time highly successful way!

I wish you, dear participants, an exciting exchange and lots of new inspiration for your future work.

Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut MdL

Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor and Tourism of the State of Baden-Württemberg

Greeting from Claus Ruhe Madsen Minister for Economic Affairs, Transport, Employment, Technology and Tourism of the State of Schleswig-Holstein

Dear event-organizing team of EUDP Research, dear European Sustainability Week participants,

As I will not be able to participate in person, I would like to express my support for your initiative with this statement. The European Sustainability Week provides an important platform for ESG researchers, industry professionals and politicians to share insights and to work on solutions in transforming our economy and society.
This event, along with many other initiatives, demonstrates the urgency we face in the race to accomplish the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) agreed on by all nations. The recent global Hamburg Sustainability Conference (HSC) with 102 participating countries emphasized that none of these goals is achievable by 2030 if we continue at the current speed.

At the same time, there are increasingly controversial discussions on the reporting requirements of more than 1.100 quantitative and qualitative sustainability criteria and on how to translate the European Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) guidelines into national laws.
As much as I agree with the need for strong ESG guidelines, I am concerned with the challenging practical implications for our corporate sector, especially, small and medium-sized companies as well as the often controversially viewed defense industry.

Sustainability reporting must not lead to companies’ exclusion from attracting procurement or funding based on not meeting certain environmental or social criteria of the current European Taxonomy’s views.

Europe has great potential to lead in all sustainability efforts. However, we need a stronger European cooperation to ensure business and production remain with our companies and their high quality and safety standards.

Therefore, I call for a more critical and pragmatic over bureaucratic approach through the lens of our corporate sectors – they are key to our competitiveness, success, and economic survival.

With the right support and – where necessary – relevant adjustments to regulatory requirements and loan policies, we should be better equipped to reach the bigger common goals of our society. Sustainable Transformation is a challenge and an opportunity – and we have to pull the right strings so that the opportunity prevails.

Claus Ruhe Madsen

Minister for Economic Affairs, Transport, Employment, Technology and Tourism of the State of Schleswig-Holstein

Greeting from Wolfram Günther Saxon State Minister for Energy, Climate Protection, Environment and Agriculture
