Biography
Professor Andreas Löschel has held the Chair of Environmental/Resource Economics and Sustainability at Ruhr University Bochum and has served as a researcher at RWI – Leibniz Institute for Economic Research since 2021. He studied economics in Nuremberg and earned his PhD in Mannheim. Before moving to the Ruhr area, he was a professor at the Universities of Münster and Heidelberg and headed a research department at ZEW – Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research. Since 2011, he has chaired the German Federal Government’s Expert Commission on the Monitoring of the Energy Transition. In 2024, he became Chair of the Board of the academies’ project Energy Systems of the Future (ESYS), jointly led by acatech – National Academy of Science and Engineering, the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities. As Coordinating Lead Author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), he is responsible for the Energy Systems chapter of the 7th Assessment Report. He has repeatedly been ranked among the 50 most influential economists in Germany in the F.A.Z. economist ranking. His research has been recognised with several awards, including the 2022 German Economic Prize of the Joachim Herz Foundation. Andreas Löschel is also a member of acatech – National Academy of Science and Engineering.
